Singapore Maths Method

The Singapore Maths method is an approach to teaching mathematics that emphasises a gradual progression from concrete experiences to abstract concepts. It focuses on problem-solving and critical thinking while promoting a deep understanding of a smaller number of topics. This method utilises visual techniques like model drawing, encourages mastery-based learning, and aims to build strong number sense and collaborative skills.

    • Spiral Maths: is an approach where students revisit and deepen their understanding of concepts over time. It involves introducing a wide range of topics early on and gradually building on them in cycles. This helps reinforce learning and make connections between ideas.

Mastery Maths: Mastery maths focuses on ensuring students thoroughly understand a concept before moving on. Students must demonstrate mastery before progressing. It’s a departure from uniform pacing, emphasising individualised learning and proficiency.

Each method has its pros and cons. The decision depends on the students’ individual needs and learning styles. The key is to tailor the approach to best accommodate the diverse ways in which students learn.

  • In planning for learning, students’ current knowledge and interests are at the centre of instructional decision-making. Instead of focusing on weaknesses, students’ competencies will be taken as starting points for all planning and the instruction is also adapted to cater to individual learning needs. Students’ thinking is viewed as “understanding in progress” and utilised as a valuable resource for further learning.
  • Critical thinking cultivates the development of a deeper engagement and understanding, greater independence and self-regulation, and stronger competence with mathematical processes, such as problem-solving, reasoning, representing and communicating.
  • A wide range of formal and informal assessments are implemented to monitor the progress of students’ learning, diagnose learning challenges, and determine the subsequent steps required for their ongoing learning development.

My son started Level 2 maths class and quickly realised it was too challenging for him. The teacher recommended 1-on-1 tutoring to help him catch up with the material. After just a few sessions, my son was able to grasp Level 2 maths concepts, and now he enjoys the subject so much!

The Singapore Maths Method Why & What?

What?

The Singapore Maths method incorporates a unique Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach. It has a strong emphasis on problem-solving, conceptual understanding, and the use of visual representations. It uses a progressive and spiral curriculum to build on students’ prior knowledge and develop mathematical skills. It is recognised internationally for its effectiveness in developing mathematical proficiency among students.

Why?

Singapore Maths Method stands out from others by prioritising mathematical thinking over rote memorisation. It encourages students to think mathematically, understand concepts deeply, build connections and develop problem-solving skills instead of relying on repetitive practice. It has been adopted or adapted by numerous countries and educational systems worldwide. This widespread adoption indicates the recognition and belief in its effectiveness in improving maths education and student outcomes.
